Bonfire - Why Community Matters: Groups as the Next Step for the Fediverse (bonfirenetworks.org)

Federated groups in Bonfire will be spaces where communities gather to organise, care, and coordinate across the fediverse. They’ll live next to your personal feed, but each group having a specific purpose: a study circle, a lab team, an activist collective, a local mutual aid crew, a project team. Inside you’ll find posts, conversations, calendars, shared resources, and more. Crucially, groups will be portable and interoperable.

Manufacturer issues remote kill command to disable smart vacuum after engineer blocks it from collecting data — user revives it with custom hardware and Python scripts to run offline (tomshardware.com)

Community iconc/technology@lemmy.world by

An engineer got curious about how his iLife A11 smart vacuum worked and monitored the network traffic coming from the device. That’s when he noticed it was constantly sending logs and telemetry data to the manufacturer — something he hadn’t consented to. The user, Harishankar, decided to block the telemetry servers’ IP addresses on his network, while keeping the firmware and OTA servers open. While his smart gadget worked for a while, it just refused to turn on soon after. After a lengthy investigation, he discovered that a remote kill command had been issued to his device.

Allow programming automation games?

Community iconc/automationgames@lemmy.zip by
Elevator7009@lemmy.zip

The title of the community is “Automation and Factory Builder Games” and the address is !automationgames@lemmy.zip. I was wondering if programming automation games would fit here too; it’s not the same thing as the factory automation ones, but I realize with the name and how the audiences might overlap it might be smart to accept them. Besides, small Fediverse: I do not think splitting them out makes sense quite yet, though it might if the Fediverse and this community ever grows. However, I also know people might have subscribed and only really seen Satisfactory-type games here and only expect that, and I am happy to respect that too. So I’d like to defer to the community on this. What do you think?
