TIL: In the Soviet Union, they considered being against the state a mental illness and would lock you up for the crime of being mentally ill (en.wikipedia.org)

Community iconc/til@lemmy.world by
opossumo@lemmings.world

The Soviet system used psychiatry as a weapon by diagnosing political opponents as mentally ill in order to confine them as patients instead of trying them in court. Anyone who challenged the state such as dissidents, writers, would-be emigrants, religious believers, or human rights activists could be branded with fabricated disorders like sluggish schizophrenia. This turned normal political disagreement into supposed medical pathology and allowed the state to present dissent as insanity.

How can we get more of the population into the Fediverse? Tech literacy?

Community iconc/technology@lemmy.world by
epicthundercat@lemmy.world

I think this is really important right now that folks know there are better options to social media. Especially as we are heading into a world where a select few have control over the main ways of communication. Truthfully, we need tech literacy in all public schools so citizens learn how to be able to protect their privacy. Self ownership seems like a good way but I still think the Fediverse isn’t user friendly enough for the population to have interest, yet I really hope we get to a point where it is. How can I help inform folks and how do we get tech literacy in schools as a basic foundational core class?

Android "Media Control" "tool"

Community iconc/mildlyinfuriating@lemmy.world by
SqueakySpider@lemmy.dbzer0.com

I’m sure anyone reading that has used Android in the last year has some gripes about the media control “tool” too. You cannot get that thing to operate in any sensible way. Screw me for using a music player, an audiobook player, playing videos on Firefox, and a podcast app. I don’t want every one of those to live there forever!!!!! The only way to get the various apps to disappear is a long press and clicking hide, only until you use the app again. The buttons fail to work all the time. Then it glitches out, gets stuck ⅔ of the way through a swipe and is completely unusable. Maybe I’m missing it but it’s not able to be turned off - I don’t even want it off but it shouldn’t break every single day. I hope someone else is as sick of this part of the UI as I am.

A Month of Chat-Oriented Programming - CheckEagle (checkeagle.com)

Community iconc/programming@programming.dev by
codeinabox@programming.dev

TL;DR: I spent a solid month “pair programming” with Claude Code, trying to suspend disbelief and adopt a this-will-be-productive mindset. More specifically, I got Claude to write well over 99% of the code produced during the month. I found the experience infuriating, unpleasant, and stressful before even worrying about its energy impact. Ideally, I would prefer not to do it again for at least a year or two. The only problem with that is that it “worked”. It’s hard to know exactly how well, but I (“we”) definitely produced far more than I would have been able to do unassisted, probably at higher quality, and with a fair number of pretty good tests (about 1500). Against my expectation going in, I have changed my mind. I now believe chat-oriented programming (“CHOP”) can work today, if your tolerance for pain is high enough.
