A small intro to German-American Hans Rickheit's work (332 online pages) [NSFW]

In terms of surreal-inspired work, there’s a bit of a ‘Jim Woodring’ vibe here, but Rickheit’s work initially tends to be more quiet, contemplative, and slightly spooky, with settings which are generally Victorian, steampunk, and ‘mad scientist’ in inclination. But sometimes horror and gore is just around the corner.

Often, there’s something of a mutant, grotesque aspect going on.

And of course, some of his work is by definition “NSFW,” as in Cochlea & Eustachia above, about two twin sisters (more like lab-produced clones) conducting nocturnal investigations in little more than their scanty nightgowns, in a mostly-deserted mansion. (or is it?)

I found the C&E stuff to be fairly charming at first, but their first adventure turns in weird, violent, destructive ways that… well, I’m not quite sure how to judge, nor whether others will appreciate it, so please: PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Here, Rickheit is doing a large-page tribute to the legendary Little Nemo in Slumberland, a pioneering comic that ran from 1905-1927, just about as influential as the equally-legendary Krazy Kat, which ran a tad later.

Sometimes it’s hard to know if something is really worth sharing here given its risqué nature, but this is still a far cry from something like the abusive Druuna series.
