"Gregory and the Gargoyles"... some pretty fetching work for 'kids lit,' eh?

"Gregory and the Gargoyle"... wow, I found it surprisingly great for 'kids lit.'

(I love good facial expressions in comics; just… wow)

You know, this seemed peeerfectly satisfying as a story devoted to the small amusements of domestic life. Writer Denis-Pierre Filippi and artist Étienne Jung were really making it work as both young-adult and all-ages fare.

And then…

So it turns out it’s (evidently) one of those series in which our protag is able to slip between worlds, much to their initial surprise. As with Narnia and John Carter of Mars, for example.

Man… I hope this one ‘stands up to scrutiny,’ so to speak. I just started it, and am quite impressed, so far. Foof… let’s see what happens?

EDIT: Finished book one. I thought story-wise it went a bit gonzo at the ~3/4 mark, and kind of skipped past a certain amount of world-building that would have helped explain things, but… yeah, it’s primarily a kids book, so that’s fair. Still, it really is quite ‘adult’ (and impressive) in many of the little visual details. Ah, but not at all surprising given that it was illustrated by powerhouse artist Étienne Jung.

Oof, I’d previously covered him here several times before, and honestly wasn’t even registering that it was him when I posted. But that’s a good problem to have, in this case. :D
