John diFool takes a shortcut. (notes in post)

Oof, it’s been a while since I read the Final Incal series, but I recently discovered that there was in fact a bit of difficulty, heartbreak and drama involved with this one. At least, in terms of how Jean Giraud ("Moebius") had to bow out after doing only the first book of this iconic, final Incal series.

You can read more in TCJ’s ("The Comics Journal") review:
https://www.tcj.com/reviews/final-incal/

So I’m not sure if the artist here is Ladrönn, who finished up tomes two & three, or “Moeby,” himself. Also kinda makes me sad that Giraud’s health was failing to the point that the review above called it ‘weaker’ Moebius art, if so. *sigh*

Anyway, I think it important to be grateful for what we have in life, to the reasonable extent that we can, and in case anyone is unaware, the Incal series fits in to the third man’s overall creative arc, i.e. Alejandro Jodorowsky, i.e., the main script-writer upon these and other works in this particular little universe (which includes MetaBarons & TechnoPriests, etc), still blazing away on his projects at 96yo!

Very interesting post :)

The image you chose is from The New Dream*, which is the first (and only) part of the unfinished series *After The Incal*. All lines in *The New Dream are by Moebius, colors are by Beltran. If you look closely, you will notice one of the typical JODO MŒB “watermarks” in the upper right part of the image. After finishing The New Dream, Giraud left the project and it was therefore permanently shelved.

The “following” parts you refer to, are from a restart of the project, released eight years later. They are exclusively based on art by Ladrönn. These parts are their own separate series, which is called *Final Incal*. It starts with a 50 page retelling of *After The Incal*, to pick up the older unfinished project and use it as a starting point.

I still remember my excitement when holding The New Dream in my hands. The greatest series of them all, by the grand masters of epic sci-fi comics was finally getting continued!
However, I also remember the utter disappointment while and after reading it. It just does not work for me, as a continuation of The Incal saga, on any level. The narrative, the character development, even the art seems completely off. With the narrative for example, they lost me almost immediately (on page 3!) but I won´t spoiler ofc. Even Jodo himself disliked page 3 of the story so much that he changed it back later, in the retelling that is the intro of Final Incal. The only good aspect is the really well done coloring by Beltran, which says a lot when the two other people on the team were Jodo and Moeb…

After that disappointment, I felt so betrayed that I ignored “Final Incal” and did not even read it once (can you believe it?!)

For sure! But I wasn’t sure if that was meant as their "gagō-in," or whether Ladrönn added it as tribute to those two greats. Also, the art kind of seemed to be work in the style of Moeby, but by another artist. Hmm, the things we learn…

Wow, interesting comments about your lack of enjoyment of ’AI.’ I think perhaps I did not actually read that one, but did read ’FI’ at some point.

Damn… no, it’s rather hard to believe that! oO

Shoot… I really need to re-read the entirety of The Incal, but am also a little bit scared, because then I’d have to physically and mentally restrain myself from posting a million and one extracts as I was enjoying it, haha.

I´d sure like reading those posts :)
